American Insurance - This insurance is required by the Status of Forces (SOFA) Agreement between the U.S. Military and the Government of Japan for SOFA licensed personnel who own and register vehicle(s) in Japan. It provides additional liability coverage for SOFA License's vehicle operators in case of an accident that you are found liable for. You can purchase the minimum amount required or any additional amount you desire. Coverage is normally nominal when compared to automobile insurance coverage in the United States. It is required in addition to the standard insurance listed below.
Japanese Compulsory Insurance - This is the basic liability insurance coverage required on all vehicles that are registered for operation on the roadways in Japan. This insurance is nominal and is normally issued and required with the purchase of all registered vehicles. It must be renewed prior to any GOJ inspection.
Full Coverage Insurance - Normally required if you are purchasing a vehicle through the base credit union or bank. This coverage is normally not required otherwise, but you can purchase same if desired.
